Frequently Asked Questions

What can I put in the dumpster?

Most common household items. There are no additional charges for items such as:

​

  • Furniture, cabinets, sinks, light fixtures

  • Books, clothing, decor, and other household goods

  • Wood, metal, drywall, pallets

  • Grill, hot tub, patio furniture

  • Soil, rocks, and stone of less than 2 cubic yards

  • Soiled or wet cardboard that cannot be recycled

​Note: Hazardous materials are not allowed. See below for list of prohibited hazardous materials. 

What materials are limited?

Heavy solid waste is only allowed in limited quantities.

​

  • Heavy solid waste must be declared prior to renting.

  • Maximum fill of 1/3 of dumpster due to weight limitation of the truck 

  • Heavy solid waste includes:

    • Bricks

    • Concrete

    • Plaster

    • Pavers

    • Soil

    • Gravel

What items will I be charged extra for?

The following items are allowed with additional charges:

​

  • Batteries

  • Tires (rubber belting)

  • Gas tanks and diesel cans

  • Electronics (e.g. TV, microwave)

  • Fluorescent bulbs

  • Mattresses and box springs

  • Appliances (fridge, stove, dehumidifier, AC)

  • Any items that contain freon 

  • Propane tanks, pressurized canisters​

Note: All items on this list must be placed by the rear door of the dumpster. See image. They are taken to a separate transfer station and must be off-loaded before the rest of the debris can be disposed of properly

What items are not allowed in the dumpster?

The following items are prohibited and may NOT be put into the dumpsters. 

​

  • Bulk liquids (unless solidified)

  • Drummed waste

  • Hazardous materials (listed above)

  • Medical waste

  • Asbestos

  • Waste from chemical processing

  • Other hazardous waste without prior approval

  • Clean cardboard boxes or miscellaneous cardboard

Violation of this restriction will result in additional fees. 

How high can I fill the dumpster

The max fill height of the dumpster for residential waste is the top of the rim. All parts of all items must fall below the top rim of the dumpster

Why can't I put cardboard in the dumpster?

Cardboard is banned from the Cedar Rapids Linn County Solid Waste Agency landfill. This ban has been in effect since 1999. 

​​

  • Garbage loads with cardboard in them will have additional tipping fees. 

  • If customer wishes to add cardboard to the dumpster for recycling for at no additional fee, please neatly collect cardboard and place at the rear door of the dumpster for separate off-loading.
